I've found that as long as I don't eat the same thing for days in a row, I can rotate a few simple recipes through and not get too bored. I'll admit, I likely have some advantages to your situation because I live by myself and I don't get too bored of the same style of meal. That's the easiest part of actually prepping. The actual cooking of the food? That's easy and less mentally taxing. It's frustrating, but it's been worth it. I've been doing it this way for over a year. I can't just eat chicken and brussels sprouts for lunch every day or I'll get sick of it, so I need to have my food also be somewhere diverse so I don't eat the same thing two or three times every single week. (if a recipe calls for 8 oz of cream cheese and I have 3 packs of 8oz each, I don't need more. I've used some apps recently to hopefully help so I can drop and drop food recipes onto days of the week and add in the ingredients to my shopping cart, but I still have to double check and make sure I don't overspend. It takes a lot of time if your inventory isn't just frozen pizzas and pop tarts that can wait for when you're ready like in my early days. So I have to plan carefully so we don't do throw food away anymore. I know what I want to eat but I have to make a list accordingly so I buy what I want to eat without throwing out food that goes bad because I took too long to get to it.Īnd then spending forever at the store because I can only go when everyone else can so it's extremely busy and I'm not only looking at prices but at the nutritional facts to make sure I get better stuff (skip on brands with lots of excess sugar, for example, whereas another brand is better, but compare the cost to see if I can afford it, etc)Īn issue I used to have is too much food going bad and spending too much. Then after that, I have to make my grocery list. (stuff that goes bad earlier in the week, salads with avocados near the end so they can ripen, etc) Then I have to fit them all in and see what days I eat which food. So I spend time just thinking of what I want to eat for my wife and me. For example, don't buy a pound of ground beef if I'm only making 2 burgers or it will go bad. Since most of my groceries are fresh and will go bad if not used, I have to place fairly accurately. On the weekend, I look at some meals I want to make. Slight alterations can give you several different recipes that are well balanced for meal prepping. Prep equal amounts of cooked rice and stir fry into 4 containers.īoth of these take less than 30min of involved prep time and freeze very will. Heat sauce til it bubbles then stir in chicken and veggies. Create a space in the middle of the skillet and add sauce. Heat skillet as hot as it will go and then add chicken and veggies back in. Mix together 1.5cups teriyaki sauce with 2 splashes of soy sauce, a dash of vinegar, and a sprinkling of corn starch. Cook frozon veggies with soy sauce in skillet or steam until warm but not cooked through. Makes 4 meals (notice a pattern?) In a large skillet cook chicken seasoned with garlic salt til it is almost done. Steam 1-2lbs broccoli and season with salt pepper and garlic. Cook 1-2cups rice depending on dietary/calorie needs. Cook for 4-6hrs on high or 6-8 on low, great for if you work in the day. Add 1-2cups of your preferred liquid - I like vinegar based BBQ sauce, but a can of soda pop is also popular. I like to rub the shoulder with chili pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and salt. I believe you're over thinking it it really isn't all that much more time consuming than what I was doing and it definitely saves me more time throughout the week.
